Kioxia Holdings Corporation plans to build a new building at its Kitakami Plant in Kitakami, expanding production capacity through an investment of approximately ¥1.8 trillion jointly funded with SanDisk. Completion is targeted for fiscal 2029, and total domestic investment is expected to reach approximately ¥5 trillion with government support.
Kioxia Holdings Corporation, a major semiconductor manufacturer, has announced plans to build a third manufacturing building at its Kitakami Plant. The investment will total approximately ¥1.8 trillion and will be jointly funded with US-based SanDisk. Operations are expected to begin in fiscal 2029.
With government support, total domestic investment, including sites other than the Kitakami Plant, is expected to reach ¥5 trillion by 2032. Iwate Prefecture has formulated the Iwate Semiconductor-Related Industries Promotion Vision and has been working to attract related companies and develop talent.
At a press conference in August, Governor Takuya Tasso (達増拓也) said a new page had been turned for semiconductor promotion in Iwate and expressed his desire to improve the business environment, including securing industrial water. He noted that investment was proceeding faster than expected and said the prefecture would work to avoid falling behind.
Kitakami City has positioned the investment as the “Kitakami River Valley” and expects the construction to lead to job creation and the revitalization of the city. Local officials and the mayor expressed their gratitude for the additional investment and pledged to support future infrastructure development and the recruitment of workers.
