Kioxia, a major semiconductor memory manufacturer, announced plans to build a new memory manufacturing facility within the grounds of its Kitakami Plant in Kitakami, Iwate Prefecture. The new facility is intended to address rising demand from data centers and is expected to strengthen the plant’s production capacity.
The investment will total approximately ¥1.8 trillion and will be funded jointly with its US partner SanDisk. Operations at the new facility are targeted to begin during fiscal 2029, with the establishment of a mass-production system for cutting-edge memory expected.
Kioxia also announced a long-term plan to invest approximately ¥5 trillion in total by 2032 together with SanDisk, contingent on government support. The plan indicates an intention to expand the development and production of next-generation memory in Japan through cooperation with the government.
Kioxia currently produces NAND flash memory at its Kitakami and Yokkaichi plants, and plans to advance the mass production of cutting-edge memory at the new facility.
