Kioxia, a major semiconductor memory maker, has announced plans to build a new manufacturing building in Iwate Prefecture. The investment is expected to exceed ¥1 trillion, increasing production capacity for data memory used for long-term data storage.
Kioxia President Ota Hiroo (太田裕雄) said at an investor briefing in June that the company was considering starting operations at the new building from 2029 onward and had begun discussions. On the 27th, he visited the Prime Minister's Office and announced the plan.
The new building is expected to mass-produce memory products for long-term data storage, and the company is said to be planning to accelerate investment to increase production of high-performance products. The investment is intended to meet the sharp increase in demand accompanying the spread of AI.
