Mitsui-Soko Logistics and IBM Japan have launched a new training program focused on developing DX talent among frontline employees. Through training in the fundamentals of AI and operational redesign, the program aims to enable frontline-led development and implementation.
MSL and IBM Japan are advancing a new training program to develop DX talent and are establishing a framework in which frontline employees are responsible for everything from conceptualizing to implementing AI-based improvement proposals. The 3-to-5-year curriculum aims to develop talent with both technical and management skills.
The pilot program launched in fiscal 2025 had 8 participants under the age of 30 from MSL's frontline operations nationwide. Through lectures and workshops, they learned the fundamentals of AI, reviewed frontline operations and considered areas for AI adoption, developing 8 AI applications.
Kohei Kakuno (角野 紘平) noted that “major change is not limited to programming ability,” describing a shift in the mindset toward designing operations on the assumption that AI will be used as the program's biggest achievement. The program will continue to develop talent capable of solving frontline issues and driving operational transformation.
Following the first year's results, 12 new participants, including employees in their 40s, joined this fiscal year, expanding the program to 20 participants. The program is expected to reach approximately 50 participants over the next 3 years, and the possibility of rolling it out horizontally across the group is also being considered.
The program works with the DX division of Mitsui-Soko Holdings and uses IBM Japan's expertise in AI and cloud services to address challenges in logistics operations and develop talent.
