The BOJ decided to accelerate the pace of its ETF sales, and the period required for completion is now expected to change from 112 years to 43 years. The market considers the impact of this sales policy to be limited.
At its monetary policy meeting on 30 October, the BOJ decided to accelerate the pace of its sales of the exchange-traded funds (ETFs) it holds. As a result, the period required for completion is expected to change from the previous 112 years to 43 years.
The BOJ announced a plan in September 2025 that would take 112 years to complete, but moved to revise it at an early stage. In January 2026, it had been selling at an annual pace of approximately ¥330 billion on a book-value basis. From January 2027, this sales pace is expected to increase by approximately 2.6 times to around ¥860 billion annually.
The market considers the impact on the equity market likely to be limited, and views have emerged that the accelerated sales are “absorbable”.
