The Bank of Japan decided to accelerate the pace of ETF sales from January 2027, increasing annual sales at book value from approximately ¥330 billion to approximately ¥860 billion, equivalent to approximately ¥2.46 trillion at market value. At the previous pace, completion was expected to take approximately 112 years, but the period will be shortened to approximately 43 years.
At its monetary policy meeting on 30 October 2024, the Bank of Japan decided to sell ETFs, a programme it has continued since the 2010s, at a faster pace than before from January 2027. Annual sales will increase from approximately ¥330 billion to approximately ¥860 billion at book value, while the scale at market value was set at approximately ¥2.46 trillion.
At the new pace, the period required to complete the ETF sales is expected to be shortened from approximately 112 years to approximately 43 years. The Bank of Japan had purchased ETFs in large quantities as part of its large-scale monetary easing, and will now proceed with the sales as it seeks to normalise monetary policy.
As part of its long-term policy, the Bank of Japan began selling ETFs in January 2026, and this decision formally indicates a substantial acceleration in the pace of sales. Market attention is therefore focused on the trend in ETF sales.
