The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology has officially launched Japan’s Manufacturing AX hub. Through a joint project proposed by DMG MORI and Komatsu, it is building a data ecosystem that uses factory data for AI and feeds the results back into manufacturing operations.
The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology announced on 2 July 2026 that it would launch a Manufacturing AX hub. The initiative aims to build a data ecosystem that aggregates manufacturing data for use in AI development. As part of the GENIAC program, the hub will serve as a virtual platform connecting factories with AI developers.
The hub aims to aggregate and anonymize equipment data that has previously been siloed, from a neutral position, and build large-scale datasets that can be provided externally. The aggregated data will be used to develop AI agents and optimization engines, supporting higher equipment utilization and improved quality in manufacturing operations.
One of the projects selected this time is a joint proposal with DMG MORI and WALC. It will conduct research and development into generative AI and physical AI using data centered on machine tools. Using CELOS Xchange as its data platform, the project will collect data at up to 1 kHz from approximately 1,000 machines operated by around 100 companies. It plans to build approximately 100 TB of datasets over 2 years.
The other project is a joint proposal with Komatsu, focusing on the automation of production management and plant-wide process scheduling. It will use KOM-MICS as its data collection platform, aggregate data from operations with diverse manufacturing configurations, and develop and demonstrate AI agents.
