Meta has announced the approximately 100g eyewear-style VR glasses Meta VR Glasses. By separating computing and power into an external pack, the company has significantly reduced the weight of the glasses, which are scheduled to launch in spring 2027 in 13 countries, including Japan. Meta also announced and launched Ray-Ban Gen 3 in Japan.
At its developer conference, Meta announced Meta VR Glasses, a VR device featuring an eyewear-style design and a separated architecture with an external pack. The external pack can be worn in a pocket or on a belt, while the glasses themselves weigh approximately 100g, reducing the burden of wearing a headset. The US price is $1,299.99, and the device is scheduled to launch in spring 2027 in 13 countries, including Japan. The Japanese yen price has not yet been determined.
The display uses a micro-OLED panel that Meta calls the “5K Infinite Display,” with approximately 2,412×2,288 pixels per eye, a density of 37 pixels per degree and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. It supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos and is scheduled to receive IMAX Enhanced certification, which would make it the first VR device to do so. The external pack weighs approximately 300g and is equipped with Snapdragon Reality Elite, 12GB of memory and 128GB of storage, expandable by up to 1TB with a microSD card.
The glasses are controlled by voice, gaze and hand gestures. Users can move the cursor with their gaze and select items by touching their index finger and thumb together. Other features include the ability to use a desk surface as a Surface keyboard, cameras that display the surroundings in color, and an optional light-blocking accessory sold separately.
Ray-Ban Gen 3 was also launched in Japan on the same day as the glasses. It is priced at ¥78,980 including tax, and its Japanese release was brought forward compared with the previous-generation Gen 2. As smart glasses, Gen 3 allow users to take photos and videos, play music, make calls, send and receive messages, and access Meta AI hands-free.
