Meta has announced its new “Meta VR Glasses,” scheduled for release next spring. The glasses unit weighs approximately 100g and the pack approximately 300g, for a combined weight of approximately 400g. Video features include support for IMAX Enhanced. A release in Japan is also planned.
At its annual Meta Connect event, Meta announced its new device, “Meta VR Glasses,” alongside a new model of Ray-Ban Meta. The device uses a video-passthrough system to deliver mixed VR/AR reality, and is distinguished by a design that separates the glasses unit from the processing hardware.
In terms of design, the glasses unit weighs approximately 100g and the pack approximately 300g, bringing the total weight when worn to approximately 400g. The glasses themselves are made from a magnesium alloy to ensure rigidity and heat dissipation. The field of view is approximately 84 degrees diagonally, 70 degrees horizontally and 66 degrees vertically, while pixel density is said to be approximately 37 PPD, which was described as potentially exceeding that of Vision Pro.
The device is designed to be operated primarily through eye tracking and hand gestures, without a controller. One feature allows a desk to be used as a virtual keyboard and touchpad. Japanese-language input is scheduled to be supported in a future software update.
For video content, support is planned for 3D movies and IMAX Enhanced, as well as numerous streaming services including Disney+ and ESPN. A feature involving ILM’s XR content was also introduced, with an emphasis on immersive experiences for movies and sports. PC connectivity supports a remote-desktop-style display over USB-C, allowing the glasses to be used as an external display.
