Apple has announced a new MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR display built from tandem OLED. Two models, 14-inch and 16-inch, are available, with a choice of M5 Pro or M5 Max chips. It will be the first Mac to support touch operation.
Sales in Japan begin on 6 November, with pre-orders starting on the 29th. Japanese pricing starts at ¥499,800 for the 14-inch model with an M5 Pro and ¥599,800 for the 16-inch model.
PROLED XDR uses tandem OLED with two layers of self-emissive pixels. Maximum brightness is 2,000 nits for both HDR and SDR, the refresh rate varies from 10 to 120Hz, and the display covers the P3 and Adobe RGB color gamuts, with more than 80% coverage of Rec.2020. Nano-texture glass is also available.
The 14-inch model weighs 1.38 kg and the 16-inch model 1.82 kg, making them lighter than their predecessors. Battery life is up to 24 hours. The launch models use M5 Pro/M5 Max configurations, with up to 16TB of storage and 128GB of unified memory. Improved LLM performance is also among the features highlighted in the news.
Touch operation uses sensors directly beneath the display, with macOS converting touch input into clicks. Applications expected to support touch by the end of the year, including Notion and Canva, were also mentioned. Other operating features include Dynamic Island, Siri AI, speakers with enhanced bass, Thunderbolt 5 and a 12MP Center Stage camera.
