JGC Holdings and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. have begun a demonstration using a sheet-based installation method that connects film-type solar cells on the folded-plate roof of the Suzuka Factory. Output is approximately 1 kW, and the demonstration is expected to continue until around early February 2027.
JGC Holdings, in collaboration with Mie Prefecture and Honda, began a demonstration of JGC’s sheet-based installation method on the same day. The method combines a large, lightweight module made by connecting multiple film-type solar cells with a heat-shielding sheet, which is installed as a support structure and may be applicable to roofs where conventional systems cannot be used.
For the demonstration, 10 modules, each comprising 3 connected film-type chalcopyrite solar cells, were installed on a folded-plate roof at Honda’s Suzuka Factory. The connected modules measure approximately 3.3 m × 0.5 m, each individual module measures approximately 0.95 m × 0.5 m, and the weight is approximately 2 kg/m2.
The modules are connected internally in advance to reduce on-site wiring work, with the aim of shortening the installation period and reducing the workload. The demonstration has total output of approximately 1 kW. The electricity generated will be used to charge swappable batteries for electric scooters, and the resulting reduction in CO₂ emissions will be verified. The demonstration is scheduled to continue until around early February 2027, with commercialization targeted for fiscal 2027.
