A demonstration project using a sheet installation method for film-type solar cells has begun in Mie Prefecture. The method will be applied to the standing-seam roof at Honda's Suzuka Factory to assess constructability, safety and heat-shielding effects. The project is scheduled to run from 8 October 2026 through around early February 2027.
JGC Holdings, working with Mie Prefecture and Honda Motor Co., Ltd., has begun a demonstration of a sheet installation method for film-type solar cells at Honda's Suzuka Factory in Mie Prefecture. The demonstration is scheduled to run from 8 October 2026 through around early February 2027 and will assess the method's suitability for standing-seam roofs.
The solar cells used in the demonstration are film-type chalcopyrite solar cells made by PXP Co., Ltd. Connected modules approximately 3.3 m long and 0.5 m wide will be combined to create a power generation facility covering approximately 16 m² and rated at approximately 1 kW. The modules are lightweight, at approximately 2 kg/m², and designed for easy deployment and transport on site.
On site, wiring to the factory building will be connected in advance to reduce on-site work, while the sheet method's constructability, safety and maintainability will be assessed. Heat-shielding effects will also be evaluated, enabling quantitative verification of both power generation and heat-load reduction.
The generated electricity will be stored in exchangeable batteries and also used to charge electric scooters, with the resulting reduction in CO2 emissions scheduled for assessment. Going forward, the JGC Group plans to expand its installation technology for next-generation film-type solar cells in line with its medium-term management plan, "BSP2030."
The demonstration is a joint project by JGC and Honda and is intended to accumulate results through around early February 2027.
