In an interview with Kyodo News, BOJ Policy Board member Sato Ayano (佐藤綾野) said that the current financial environment is accommodative and that she supports a policy of gradually adjusting the policy rate. She also indicated that she intends to consider the timing of future rate hikes based on a range of data.
This was the first time Sato had responded to a media interview since taking office in June, and the contents of an interview with The Asahi Shimbun dated the same day were also reported. At the September Monetary Policy Meeting, she opposed a rate hike together with Policy Board member Asada Toichiro (浅田統一郎), who was appointed by the Takaichi administration.
She said she would not adhere to a specific pace for future rate hikes, such as once every 6 months or once every 3 months, and said she wanted to make decisions after confirming trends in consumption and income.
