Samsung Electronics has established APL, a research center focused on back-end processes for AI semiconductors, in Minato Mirai, Yokohama, and announced plans to invest ¥40 billion over five years. It also said it plans to secure more than 100 research staff by 2027.
South Korea's Samsung Electronics established APL (Advanced Package Lab), a research center for the back-end processes of advanced semiconductors, in Minato Mirai, Yokohama, at an opening ceremony. The company explained that the facility is intended to strengthen its competitiveness in back-end processes in Japan.
The company plans to invest ¥40 billion in the research center over five years from 2024 and advance the development of advanced packaging technologies. As the further miniaturization of circuitry becomes increasingly challenging, Samsung aims to strengthen back-end technologies that affect the performance of AI semiconductors.
The company said it will strengthen collaboration with local materials, component and equipment manufacturers and research institutions. It also indicated that it intends to further enhance competitiveness by combining the semiconductor design and manufacturing technologies of Japanese companies and Samsung Electronics.
Approximately 100 people, including Vice Chairman Jun Young-hyun (全永鉉), head of the Device Solutions Division, as well as representatives of the Japanese government, local authorities and business partners, attended the opening ceremony.
