Samsung Electronics, South Korea's leading electronics company, held an opening ceremony for its semiconductor research center in Yokohama and outlined plans to promote research into advanced technologies. The company said it would deepen cooperation with semiconductor-related companies in Japan by developing the research environment and seek to secure highly skilled engineers.
The center is expected to receive a total investment of ¥40 billion over five years from 2024, including ¥20 billion in subsidies from the Japanese government and ¥2.5 billion from Yokohama City. As a result, full-scale operations began in 2026.
The center will focus on packaging technology, which connects multiple semiconductors. The company also indicated that TSMC is ahead in this field. It emphasized its intention to strengthen cooperation between Japan and South Korea amid the US-China struggle for semiconductor dominance.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening Japan-South Korea cooperation, with the center in Yokohama intended to reinforce the foundation for research and development in advanced semiconductor technologies.
