The Nikkei 225 fell sharply again following declines in U.S. tech stocks. After the loss temporarily widened to more than ¥1,400 after the open, the decline eased, and the index ended the morning session at 64,534.03.
In the Tokyo market on the 19th, the Nikkei 225 fell sharply again, with selling leading from the open amid the previous day’s decline in U.S. stocks. The decline widened during the first half of the morning session, temporarily exceeding ¥1,400, but the market subsequently eased its losses, and the index closed the morning session at 64,534.03.
In the U.S. market, the Dow remained near its nominal lows, while the Nasdaq fell sharply amid concerns about financing for AI-related companies. The fact that FRB Chair Warsh did not signal an outlook for rate hikes also weighed on the market, and selling in U.S. tech stocks spilled over into the Tokyo market.
Among individual stocks, large caps including Advantest, SoftBank Group, Tokyo Electron, Fast Retailing, TDK and Murata Manufacturing fell across the board. Meanwhile, BayCurrent Consulting, KDDI, Terumo, Recruit Holdings, Itochu, Kioxia Holdings, Nitori Holdings, Secom, Mitsubishi Corporation, Konami Group, Kao and Aeon rose, supporting the index.
By sector, mining, marine transportation, and oil and coal products showed strength, while nonferrous metals, electric appliances and banking declined. In the afternoon, the market is expected to consolidate in negative territory amid caution over selling pressure in semiconductor-related stocks, with attention focused on trends in Asian markets and U.S. stock index futures.
