In the Tokyo stock market on the morning of the 13th, the Nikkei average fell sharply, with selling in AI-related stocks and declines in semiconductor stocks weighing on the market. The decline briefly exceeded ¥1,600. The morning-session close was ¥67,292.39, while the TOPIX remained slightly lower.
The Nikkei average extended its sharp decline, standing ¥1,738.53 lower at the morning-session close. The decline was driven by growing concerns in US markets over intensifying competition in semiconductor memory, which led to concentrated selling in large-cap AI-related stocks.
The TOPIX fell 18.90 points to 4,085.91. While the Nikkei average's decline was particularly pronounced, a limited number of mega-cap AI-related stocks accounted for much of the downward pressure on the broader index.
Funds flowed into domestic-demand, financial and energy stocks, with buying spreading across stocks exposed to domestic and overseas demand and economically sensitive stocks. At the same time, selling pressure on semiconductor- and AI-related stocks intensified.
Domestic securities analysts said that confirming expanded demand for AI- and semiconductor-related products during the earnings season would be key to the Nikkei average consolidating in the ¥70,000 range. Trading value on the Prime Market was approximately ¥2.5657 trillion and trading volume approximately 682.81 million shares as of 10:00.
