GlobalFoundries, a major US semiconductor contract manufacturer, announced that it will work with Japanese companies to build a new semiconductor plant in New York State, using the investment and financing framework for the US agreed by the Japanese and US governments in tariff negotiations.
The new plant is expected to have a maximum investment of approximately $21 billion. The semiconductors to be manufactured are expected to be used mainly in automobiles, industrial equipment and communications infrastructure. Tokyo Electron is expected to supply the manufacturing equipment.
The project is intended to strengthen Japanese and US supply chains and is also cited as a response to geopolitical risks, including a contingency involving Taiwan. It has also been suggested that Japan would benefit by diversifying disaster risks.
Since the Kumamoto earthquake, the dispersion of domestic semiconductor plants has been identified as an issue in Japan. GlobalFoundries' project is expected to be the third such investment case.
