Amid appointments to the Bank of Japan's Policy Board, moves have emerged under the Takaichi administration to appoint reflationist economists to key positions. Market participants are voicing concerns about further yen depreciation and a renewed rise in prices.
It has been suggested that the aim is to fill the Bank of Japan's Monetary Policy Meeting Policy Board seats with reflationist economists and others, thereby restraining the pace of rate hikes. Similar moves are expected regarding the successor to a hawkish Policy Board member whose term expires next summer, and views are spreading that this could affect the Bank of Japan's operations.
More recently, expectations have emerged that the appointment of the next governor could also be affected, as Governor Ueda Kazuo's (植田和男) term expires in spring 2028.
At a press conference on 25 September, Jōnai (城内) emphasised the direction of reflationary policy, saying, “We will ease monetary policy further and pursue fiscal policy flexibly.” Among market participants, views are spreading that these remarks should not be taken at face value.
Market participants are again warning that the policy could lead to further yen depreciation and higher long-term interest rates, while attention is focused on the possible return of coordinated intervention by the United States and future Japanese monetary policy.
