The Nikkei 225 rebounded sharply in the Tokyo stock market on the morning of the 30th, rising by more than ¥900 at one point and then by more than ¥1,000 before narrowing its gains toward the end of the session. In morning trading, the index recovered to the ¥66,000 range, and closed at ¥66,318.81, up ¥837.54 from the previous day. The TOPIX ended the session at 4,076.04, up 34.91 points. Buying of AI-related stocks, including major semiconductor manufacturing equipment maker Tokyo Electron, supported the market.
Reports of strong sales growth at U.S. OpenAI prompted SoftBank Group, which has invested in the company, to rise in sympathy. SoftBank Group's share price stood at ¥6,393 as of the morning close, up ¥358 from the previous day. The prevailing view in the market was that positive developments in the United States and lower oil prices had improved investor sentiment and strengthened risk appetite.
Meanwhile, the rise was not broad-based, with half of the stocks on the Prime Market falling. Profit-taking selling also emerged against the backdrop of elevated interest rates, acting as a factor limiting further gains. Given the uncertainty surrounding the situation in the Middle East, the market outlook is expected to warrant close attention.
