Sekisui Chemical reports that it has established the world's first 1-meter-wide roll-to-roll production technology for perovskite solar cells, toward their commercialisation. Mass production at the 100 MW scale will begin in FY2027, with expansion to the 1 GW scale planned from FY2030 onward.
Developers at Sekisui Chemical explained the progress of demonstration testing and the launch of sales for perovskite solar cells, which are attracting attention as a next-generation power-generation technology originating in Japan. Demonstration projects are progressing at gymnasium and school roofs, alongside airport runways and in other locations, and sales began in March this year. This is accelerating field deployment toward practical use.
Regarding its production system, the company established the world's first continuous production technology using a 1-meter-wide line in FY2025. It is using a plant in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, and is installing equipment acquired from Sharp as it builds annual production capacity of 100 MW. Installation of the machinery and equipment is nearly complete, and mass production at the 100 MW scale is scheduled to begin in FY2027.
The company then aims to expand to the 1 GW scale from FY2030 onward, while assessing demand trends. It is said that using all five floors of the acquired plant would enable production of 1 GW. The company has stated that it aims to become self-sustaining as a business without relying on subsidies by improving the competitiveness of total system costs, including costs, installation and maintenance.
