Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara said that tensions between the US and Iran were rising again and stressed the importance of securing the restoration of free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara said he was seriously concerned that military tensions between the US and Iran were rising again. The Japanese government is closely monitoring the deteriorating regional situation.
He said that de-escalating the situation and restoring free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz were important. On the premise that talks between the US and Iran would resume, he said Japan would continue its diplomatic efforts in coordination with the international community to achieve an early final agreement, including on the nuclear issue.
On 30 August, the US attacked 2 rocket launchers near the Strait of Hormuz in its first military action in a month, and on 1 September it also attacked Iranian air defense facilities and mine-laying equipment. Meanwhile, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced attacks on US military bases in Jordan, Bahrain and Iraq using ballistic missiles and drones, reigniting tensions between the two countries.
