The Nikkei 225 fell for a third straight session, pressured by declines in U.S. stocks and higher oil prices. The index closed at ¥62,189.65, with declines in semiconductor-related stocks weighing on the market, while trading houses remained firm.
Following the decline in U.S. stocks the previous day, the Nikkei 225 opened 243.20 yen lower on the 26th. Selling pressure on large semiconductor-related stocks intensified, and although the index briefly moved into positive territory during the morning session, it subsequently lost ground again, marking its third consecutive decline. As concerns about recouping funds invested in AI-related projects and caution over higher oil prices spread, the index traded in a narrow range at lower levels during the afternoon session, at times narrowing its decline on buying in futures. Semiconductor-related stocks weakened again late in the session, and selling pressure returned toward the close.
Among individual stocks, Toyota Tsusho, Mitsubishi Corporation, ITOCHU, KONAMI GROUP and Chugai Pharmaceutical rose. Advantest, Tokyo Electron, Fast Retailing, Ibiden, TDK, Kyocera and Sumitomo Electric, among others, declined. Trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was approximately 2.12782 billion shares, while trading value was approximately ¥6.6438 trillion.
