GF announced plans to establish a new semiconductor plant in New York State. Renesas Electronics will be the customer, Tokyo Electron will supply the equipment, and the project is expected to be worth up to approximately $21 billion (approximately ¥3 trillion).
GlobalFoundries (GF) announced plans to build a new semiconductor plant in New York State in the eastern United States. The project is based on a US-Japan government investment and financing framework and is expected to reach a maximum of approximately $21 billion (approximately ¥3 trillion).
The new plant will produce semiconductors for automobiles, industrial equipment and communications infrastructure, and supply them to Renesas Electronics. Tokyo Electron will supply the manufacturing equipment.
Renesas is considering procuring logic semiconductors for computing applications, and its collaboration with GF will give concrete form to the joint manufacturing plan for next-generation automotive semiconductors announced in February this year.
The project is intended to strengthen US-Japan supply chains and address geopolitical risks, and is also viewed as contributing to the diversification of disaster risks following the Kumamoto earthquake. To date, 6 projects involving US investment and financing have been agreed, totaling $109 billion, equivalent to approximately 20% of the overall framework.
