Hiday Hidaka has launched an initiative with Tokyo Gas and others to offset GHG emissions associated with rice production for Hidakaya, using J-Credits generated in Tochigi Prefecture. The initial phase is scheduled to reduce emissions by 17 tonnes of CO2 equivalent and will cover the production stage for approximately 8.3 tonnes of rice.
Hiday Hidaka, Tokyo Gas and Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions announced that they will launch an initiative to offset greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of rice served at Hidakaya stores in Tochigi Prefecture, using J-Credits generated in the prefecture. The 3 companies have signed an outsourcing agreement.
The initial phase is planned to cover 17 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in generated credits, which Hiday Hidaka will purchase. The emissions to be offset are from the production stage for approximately 8.3 tonnes of rice, equivalent to approximately 83,000 servings of regular-size fried rice.
The scheme certifies methane-emission reductions from extending the mid-season drainage period in rice cultivation, converting them into CO2 equivalents. The credits in this initiative are scheduled to be certified and issued for reductions achieved by extending the mid-season drainage period during 2025 rice cultivation. The offset covers emissions from upstream processes associated with procuring rice, including rice cultivation (Scope 3), and excludes cooking and waste at stores, as well as transportation and storage.
Going forward, the companies plan to expand GHG-reduction initiatives beyond the rice supply chain to include the processing, cooking and serving of ingredients at stores and factories.
