Bank of The Ryukyus and IBM Japan entered into an AI partnership on 16 September, declaring the first year of AI adoption. They aim to achieve sustainable growth in Okinawa’s economy and advance regional finance by redesigning operations around AI and developing AI talent.
Bank of The Ryukyus and IBM Japan announced an AI partnership on 16 September. Rather than adding AI to existing operations, the partnership aims to transform the organization on an AI-first basis, with the goal of improving not only the financial institution’s productivity but also the competitiveness of the regional economy.
The partners plan to focus on three areas: transforming banking operations, developing AI talent, and revitalizing Okinawa’s economy. They will jointly advance the development of a data-utilization platform and the establishment of AI governance. By creating an operating environment in which employees can use AI, they will free up time for higher-value work by supporting routine tasks.
Looking ahead, the partnership envisions financial services built around AI, including support for information gathering in loan assessments and corporate analysis, as well as more sophisticated sales proposals. AI analysis of data is expected to improve the accuracy of customer support by assisting employees with decision-making.
For regional revitalization, the partners will strengthen the dissemination of AI knowledge to companies in Okinawa and support their digital transformation, including the development of new products and services. They aim to strengthen the foundations of the regional economy through programs to develop AI skills and support initiatives to improve financial literacy.
