GlobalFoundries, a major US semiconductor contract manufacturer, announced plans to build a new semiconductor plant in New York State in collaboration with Japanese companies, based on the investment and financing agreement for the US reached by the Japanese and US governments in tariff negotiations. The project is expected to be worth up to approximately $21 billion (approximately ¥3.32 trillion).
The new plant will produce semiconductors for automobiles, industrial equipment and communications infrastructure, and supply them to Renesas Electronics, a major Japanese semiconductor company. Tokyo Electron is expected to supply the manufacturing equipment, with the project intended to strengthen Japanese and US supply chains.
One objective is to diversify and reinforce supply chains in anticipation of events including a contingency involving Taiwan, as part of efforts to address Japanese and US geopolitical risks. The project has also been cited as offering the benefit of diversifying operational risks at semiconductor plants in Japan following the Kumamoto earthquake.
The announcement is positioned as the third investment and financing case for the US, and it has been reported that additional cases are expected to be announced in the future.
