MobiCom became a consolidated subsidiary as KDDI increased its ownership stake. Its ownership ratio stood at 98.8% as of the end of March 2026, and KDDI remains involved in its management through measures including the secondment of personnel from its headquarters in Japan.
MobiCom was established in 1995 through joint investment by Mongolia's Newcom, KDDI and Sumitomo Corporation, and commercialized Mongolia's first mobile communications service in March 1996. It adopted second-generation GSM as its wireless technology and subsequently introduced 3G W-CDMA, 4G LTE and 5G NR in succession.
On 10 March 2016, KDDI made an additional investment and made MobiCom a consolidated subsidiary. Since then, Japanese personnel seconded from KDDI have served as CEO. KDDI's ownership ratio reached 98.8% as of 31 March 2026.
MobiCom has grown into a leading operator by providing communications infrastructure throughout Mongolia and has expanded beyond communications into areas including electronic payments. It ranked 10th in 2026 among the TOP-100 companies selected by the Mongolian government and the chamber of commerce.
It continues to operate today and maintains and operates GSM, 3G, 4G and 5G among the four generations of mobile technology.
