Takashimaya announced the first commercialization of casual wear made from recycled “unused suits.” Approximately 3,200 kg of unused suits will be processed into fabric, with 8 items in total to go on sale from 7 October 2026.
As part of its sustainable initiative, TSUNAGU ACTION, Takashimaya is carrying out the Suit Recycling Project to commercialize casual wear made from recycled unused suits, having collected approximately 3,200 kg of unused suits and produced recycled fabric. The recycled material accounts for approximately 17%, and 8 items in total will be launched in collaboration with 6 brands in Japan and overseas.
The products will be offered at locations including the POP-UP on the 6th floor of the main building of Nihombashi Takashimaya S.C. and the special event venue on the 4th floor of the Femme Maison at Shinjuku Takashimaya. All products will be sold exclusively by Takashimaya, using approximately 17% material derived from collected suits made of 100% wool. Sales will begin at each venue on 7 October, with selected products also available at 4 stores in Tamagawa, Yokohama, Osaka and Kyoto.
The collected suits were recycled into new fabric through a process carried out by a specialized domestic partner and incorporated into all 8 items. Other components are also being put to effective use. Front sections, including interlinings and shoulder pads, are shredded and mixed with resin to produce fiber-reinforced pellets, which are upcycled into display fixtures, hangers and other products.
In an industry-academia collaboration, Takashimaya is working with Kyoto Institute of Technology and 城東テクノ株式会社 to commercialize fixtures using materials derived from collected suits. This initiative is positioned as part of the efforts of Depart de Loop and TSUNAGU ACTION to create a circular society.
