Hiroyuki Shibasaki (柴崎浩之) was diagnosed with the intractable disease Becker muscular dystrophy at age 10. As his muscle strength declined, he aspired to become a researcher and joined the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2019, seeking work supporting research.
He resolved to work on initiatives that bring the patient perspective to drug discovery and medical research. That same year, the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development published a guidebook on patient and public involvement, encouraging these efforts.
In 2022, he established the BMD Subcommittee of the Japan Muscular Dystrophy Association and demonstrated his commitment to addressing issues such as drug wastage.
