Patient and public involvement (PPI), in which patients and members of the public participate from the planning stage of a clinical trial through its implementation and evaluation, is beginning to spread in Japan. Hiroyuki Shibasaki (柴崎浩之), who has muscular dystrophy, is cited as one example of the initiative.
PPI refers to an initiative in which patients and members of the public participate alongside researchers and healthcare professionals from the planning stage of research through its implementation and evaluation. Its aim is to reflect patients’ experiences and values in the design and evaluation of clinical trials and to develop more appropriate treatments and drugs.
This approach began in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the 1990s, attracted attention in Japan in the 2010s, and has since been put into practice in various ways.
Hiroyuki Shibasaki (柴崎浩之), who has muscular dystrophy, is introduced as one of those actively involved in PPI.
