Oshima Shipbuilding has announced plans to make approximately ¥18 billion in capital investment to strengthen the construction capacity of its Koyagi Shipyard, using the national shipbuilding industry revitalization fund. It expects to increase annual construction from 4 vessels to 10 by 2031.
Oshima Shipbuilding held a press conference at its headquarters in Saikai, Nagasaki Prefecture, and announced plans to make approximately ¥18 billion in capital investment to significantly strengthen the construction capacity of its Koyagi Shipyard. It outlined a plan to expand the shipyard’s production system on the assumption that the fund will be used.
The company plans to use the national shipbuilding industry revitalization fund, which is expected to provide support of up to approximately ¥6.1 billion, it explained. President Yamaguchi Makoto (山口眞) said that shipbuilding is recognized as an essential industry for Japan and that the investment and renewal of facilities can be accelerated.
The Koyagi Shipyard was acquired from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 2022 and covers approximately 960,000 square meters. Going forward, the company aims to improve construction capacity, mainly for bulk carriers, through upgrades including cranes.
At the same time, it will develop facilities for the mass production of foundations for floating offshore wind power generation. It plans to establish a system that can operate this alongside shipbuilding, but has not disclosed a specific start date within the year.
