Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding announced on 2 October 2026 that they had signed an agreement to acquire industrial development land on the artificial island of Choshu Dejima in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
They plan to transfer some functions from the Eura Plant at the existing Shimonoseki Shipyard and establish a new ship-hull-block manufacturing plant to strengthen their production system. Against a backdrop of rising global demand for maritime transportation, they aim to improve their competitiveness over the medium to long term.
The investment is expected to total approximately ¥100 billion, of which they are scheduled to receive a subsidy of up to ¥40 billion.
Choshu Dejima, the site of the new plant, is an artificial island connected to the Akada district by the Choshu Dejima Bridge. Access to the Eura Plant is expected to be easy via National Route 191 and Prefectural Route 252.
