Samsung held a briefing on its foldable smartphones and introduced Flex Titanium Technology as a new technology that advances the display structure of the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra. The company highlighted a design that combines a thinner display with durability.
The titanium material at the core of the new technology uses a structure combining a titanium plate and a titanium-alloy film. The film is said to be approximately one-third the thickness of a human hair after thinning and heat treatment. The Fold8 Ultra is 4.1 mm thick when unfolded, while the Fold8 weighs 201 g when folded, with both models promoted as offering improved performance over previous devices.
Vice President Yang said collaboration with multiple Japanese companies had been essential to realizing the technology, and expressed the view that Japanese companies were the only ones with the materials and technology needed to achieve both flexibility and strength. Yang also discussed the difficulties encountered during development and the importance of many years of preparation.
At the briefing, 8 generations of real-world usage data and expertise were positioned as a differentiator from competitors, and the company said it had conducted more than 100 types of reliability testing. Regarding Apple's potential entry into the market, Samsung indicated that it welcomed the competition while emphasizing its integrated design capabilities.
