The Nikkei Average fell for the first time in 3 days, DISCO plunged and PAL GROUP Holdings released its earnings. McDonald’s September sales increased, while changes to the new TOPIX constituents and the Nikkei Average’s performance also drew attention.
The Nikkei Stock Average fell for the first time in 3 days, closing at ¥70,035.71, down ¥648.27 from the previous day. Growth stocks were also affected. Although the U.S. market was firm, selling prevailed in Japan, particularly in technology stocks.
Among stocks in focus today, DISCO fell sharply. Although shipments in DISCO’s most recent quarter reached a record high, the stock came under selling pressure because the results contained few surprises. Advantest had renewed its all-time high through the previous day but also fell today.
PAL GROUP Holdings announced its first-half results for the fiscal year ending February 2027, reporting operating profit of ¥14.2 billion, up 1.1% year on year. Although weak performance in the general merchandise business and higher personnel expenses caused results to fall short of the previous forecast, some market participants viewed the news as removing a negative overhang, prompting buying.
Same-store sales at McDonald’s Holdings Company (Japan) rose 10.0% year on year in September, marking the 21st consecutive month of revenue growth. Customer numbers increased 3.3% and average spending per customer rose 6.5%. The announcement of the new TOPIX constituents is due from October, and expectations of new additions are also seen as a buying catalyst.
