The Nikkei Average started the afternoon session in the upper ¥66,000s, up ¥1,148.83 from the previous day, and remained above its morning close at the opening. Buying in major stocks and gains in some semiconductor-related shares supported the rise in the Nikkei Average.
The Nikkei Average began trading in the afternoon session of the Tokyo market at ¥66,169.77, up ¥1,148.83 from the previous day. It moved to a higher level from the morning close of ¥66,460.11, with buying still prevailing at the opening. Nikkei 225 futures narrowed their gains during the lunch break. U.S. markets are expected to be closed for the Labor Day holiday, and a wait-and-see mood may spread as investors assess developments in global markets.
Stocks ranking among the top by trading value on the TSE Prime Market included Kioxia Holdings, SoftBank Group, Advantest, Taiyo Yuden, Fujikura, Ibiden, Tokyo Electron, Lasertec, Murata Manufacturing and KOKUSAI ELECTRIC. These stocks led the market higher. Mitsubishi UFJ, Sumitomo Mitsui and Sony Group, meanwhile, fell. By sector, marine transportation, nonferrous metals, and glass and ceramics products stood out with gains.
Buying in semiconductor-related stocks supported the broader market at times, and the market’s direction is expected to move in tandem with developments in U.S. markets. Depending on the afternoon session’s course, the breadth of the gains and trends in trading value may become the next focus.
