The Nikkei 225 fell sharply from the previous day in the Tokyo stock market on the morning of the 8th, as selling by overseas investors intensified amid falling US stocks and expectations of higher interest rates. The index fell by more than ¥800 at one point and closed the morning session at ¥69,373.40, down ¥662.31.
TOPIX also fell for a second consecutive session, closing the morning at 4,092.09 points, down 62.02 points from the previous day. A decline in Japan's long-term interest rates was cited as a factor supporting share prices, but overall selling pressure remained strong. Trading value on the Prime Market was estimated at ¥3.51 trillion, with trading volume of 971.95 million shares. The number of declining stocks was 1,360, accounting for approximately 90% of the total.
Among individual stocks, TDK and Fujikura were sold, while declines in trading house stocks also stood out. Komatsu and Kubota were weak against the backdrop of developments at US Caterpillar, while some Recruit, AI-related and semiconductor-related stocks rebounded on dip-buying toward the end of the session.
