The Nikkei Average continued to decline at the Tokyo Stock Exchange open, at one point falling ¥500, after declines in US stocks the previous day weighed on the market. Selling by overseas investors spread to leading stocks, with selling concentrated in AI- and semiconductor-related names.
The Nikkei Average started lower for a second straight session in morning trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on the 8th, falling to the ¥69,500 range. Declines in US stocks the previous day weighed on the market, and selling of index futures by overseas investors and leading stocks led the decline in Tokyo.
Major US stock indexes, including the Dow Jones Industrial Average, fell on the 7th, with the temporary rise in US long-term interest rates to a 24-year high viewed as a factor prompting selling. Selling also spread across leading AI- and semiconductor-related stocks in Tokyo on the 8th.
The Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) also continued to decline, adding to downward pressure across the market alongside the Nikkei Average. Among individual stocks, TDK and Fujikura fell, while resource-related stocks such as INPEX and Sumitomo Metal Mining were also lower. Fast Retailing and Recruit rose, and Kioxia also advanced.
