Buying was dominant in high-priced stocks in the Tokyo stock market, sending the Nikkei 225 sharply higher from the previous day at the start of the afternoon session and keeping it near its highs. The backdrop included lower domestic long-term interest rates and gains in U.S. stock futures, while some AI- and semiconductor-related stocks attracted buying after earlier declines.
The Nikkei 225 rebounded to ¥63,762.83 at the start of the afternoon session, up ¥278.73 from the previous day, and traded near its intraday highs. Some AI-related stocks came under selling pressure in the morning session, but buying to cover those positions spread in the afternoon.
Buying was led by high-priced stocks, with 68% of issues rising and 28% falling. Trading volume reached 810.78 million shares, while trading value totaled ¥3.2816 trillion.
By sector, pharmaceuticals, information and communications, and retail declined, while oil and coal products, mining, and electric power and gas rose. The Nikkei 225 rebounded from the opening, and movements in individual stocks, including some AI-related issues, influenced the market's direction.
