The Nikkei Average in the afternoon session on 14 October posted a modest fifth consecutive decline, ending down ¥33 at ¥67,744.29. In afternoon trading, declines in related stocks, driven by weakness in ASML in U.S. after-hours trading following its earnings announcement, spread across the market.
In the afternoon session, the Nikkei Average fell ¥33.23 from the previous day, maintaining a fifth consecutive decline despite the modest move. The TOPIX fell ¥13.89 to 4,096.78 points.
The market was supported at times in the morning by a reaction to the previous day's sharp decline. However, after 2 p.m., ASML Holding's strong earnings growth for July–September was reported, and ASML shares fell in U.S. after-hours trading. This prompted selling in related domestic stocks, and the Nikkei Average moved lower again into the closing session.
Trading volume on the TSE Prime Market was 218.982 million shares, and trading value was ¥745.07 billion. There were 604 advancers, 892 decliners and 56 unchanged stocks.
By sector, 19 of the 33 sectors fell and 14 rose. Bank and precision instrument stocks declined, oil and coal product stocks remained firm, and insurance stocks were soft.
