The G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, on the 15th, with inflation control and correcting imbalances expected to be the focus. With crude oil prices remaining high amid turmoil in the Middle East, policy coordination in response to rising long-term interest rates will be a key issue.
The G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, on the 15th. With crude oil prices remaining elevated and the risk of prolonged inflation emerging, policy coordination, including monetary policy, will be an issue against the backdrop of a sharp rise in long-term interest rates.
Correcting global current-account imbalances, with China's excess production in mind, will also be a focus.
Japan is expected to be represented by Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama is coordinating her attendance at the meeting while prioritizing deliberations in the extraordinary Diet session on legislation related to a consumption-tax cut. A G7 finance ministers and central bank governors meeting is also expected to be held there.
The meeting is unlikely to issue an outcome document. At the previous meeting in September in Asheville, North Carolina, the U.S. prepared a chair's statement, and this meeting will serve as the final coordination ahead of the year-end summit.
