The Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Japan co-hosted a Japan-UAE Strategic Forum in Tokyo with TRENDS Research & Advisory, a UAE think tank. Government officials and experts from Japan and the UAE discussed economic and security cooperation amid rising geopolitical risks.
At the first session, “Foreign Policy and Strategic Cooperation,” former Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications Hayashi Yoshimasa (林芳正) said that Japan has accumulated technological and research and development capabilities, while the UAE has resources, capital and a young population. He pointed to the potential for the two countries to expand cooperation based on their complementary relationship. The session also raised the possibility of expanding cooperation in areas including quantum technology, space and human resources development.
Fatima Alremeithi, a senior researcher at TRENDS Research & Advisory, described economic security as a key issue for many countries and identified energy security, maritime security and supply chain protection as important pillars of cooperation between the two countries.
At the second session, “Trade, Investment and Next-Generation Economic Partnerships,” Rawia Al Blooshi of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research said that regional developments had underscored anew the importance of energy security and reliable economic partners. The session also identified the processing and recycling of critical minerals and battery materials as promising areas, particularly in advanced materials.
