Sharjah Airport International Free Zone (SAIF ZONE) of the United Arab Emirates held the “MENA Industry Outlook Briefing” in Tokyo, Japan, on 27 October. It introduced industrial trends and business opportunities in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to Japanese companies.
The briefing covered the current progress of investment in economic diversification, digital technology and AI, and renewable energy. It identified business opportunities for Japanese companies in water and environmental services, logistics and aviation, and energy-related equipment and services. It also explained how government-affiliated entities and major companies within the GCC typically lead projects, with equipment and systems suppliers and EPC companies organizing the work.
It was suggested that Japanese mid-sized and small companies could provide equipment such as valves, pumps and inspection systems, as well as replacement parts. Citing Budounomori of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, as an example, Sharjah explained its cost competitiveness and airport-access advantages. The importance of selecting local partners and using public institutions was also emphasized.
At the panel discussion, metal refining and processing were identified as areas in which SAIF ZONE is focusing its efforts, and a vision was presented for developing a hub for rare metals. Expectations were also expressed for Japanese companies in advanced technology sectors to establish operations in the region.
