The Nikkei continued to trade below its morning-session low on the Tokyo stock market, falling against a backdrop of persistently high long-term interest rates and weakness in US futures. Selling spread further in the afternoon, and the market ended trading well below its morning-session close.
The Nikkei fell below its morning-session low in afternoon trading, declining to ¥64,215.47. Persistently high long-term interest rates and weak US futures prompted broad-based selling.
The Nikkei ended the morning session at ¥64,473.16, down ¥1,742.18 from the previous day, while TOPIX also fell sharply. Trading volume was 1.12178 billion shares, and trading value was ¥4.0137 trillion.
The Nikkei opened at ¥65,195.43, down ¥1,019.91 from the previous day, as selling in AI- and semiconductor-related stocks and selling carried over from the trend in US markets spread. There were also reports that it temporarily fell by more than ¥1,800 in the 9 a.m. hour.
The move was attributed to persistently high long-term interest rates and the decline in US futures, which also affected afternoon trading.
