JCCL has commercialized VPSA2, which combines a solid sorbent developed at Kyushu University with vacuum pressure swing adsorption technology. The containerized system can capture 30 kg of high-purity CO₂ per day, with orders accepted from October 2026. The system is housed in a 20-foot container and will be rolled out as the result of joint development with Toyo Seikan Group Holdings, Ltd.
VPSA2 uses a CO₂ capture material developed at Kyushu University and proprietary technology to selectively adsorb low-concentration CO₂ from flue gas generated by city-gas combustion. The containerized system uses vacuum pressure swing adsorption to recover CO₂ at a purity of 99% or higher, with a targeted recovery volume of approximately 30 kg per day.
The system can handle high-humidity flue gas and achieves low-energy CO₂ capture without requiring a drying process or large-scale equipment. It also integrates the required functions into a 20-foot container, reducing the space needed for installation and facilitating transportation.
Against a backdrop of growing demand for CO₂ capture technologies to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, VPSA2 was developed to lower the barriers to adoption at small- and medium-scale emission sources. An environmental demonstration project commissioned by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment in fiscal 2025 indicated the potential for e-methane synthesis through methanation using CO₂.
Going forward, JCCL plans to increase the system’s scale and performance, expand collaboration in the CCUS field, and pursue the deployment of practical, energy-efficient CO₂ capture technology among companies, universities and local governments.
The product was developed to overcome the difficulty of applying conventional equipment to small- and medium-scale emission sources because of its large size and high cost. Orders will be accepted from October 2026, with a standard delivery time of approximately 7–8 months. Pricing will be quoted separately.
