As demand for power semiconductors that control electricity expands with the growth of AI data centers, Japanese companies are seeking to strengthen their competitiveness through consolidation and next-generation materials.
As demand for AI-related data centers expands, expectations are growing that opportunities for power semiconductors will increase. Semiconductors that efficiently control high voltages and large currents are attracting particular attention, and the supply chain surrounding data centers is expected to be strengthened alongside the buoyant memory market.
Infineon Technologies, the leading company in this field, announced on 24 August that it would acquire India's C2i Semiconductors, gaining digital power management and vertical power delivery technologies for AI servers. Through the acquisition, the company aims to drive growth by leveraging its strengths in power semiconductors and automotive semiconductors.
Japanese companies are pursuing consolidation to expand their scale as a means of competing, and industry restructuring is under way. At the same time, the rise of Chinese manufacturers is becoming increasingly pronounced, drawing attention to how competition will develop.
Against the backdrop of slower growth in the EV market, concerns are also emerging over demand for automotive power semiconductors using SiC, and technology to reduce data center power consumption is expected to be key.
