In the Tokyo market on the 14th, dollar-yen held above the ¥153.70 level, supported by safe-haven dollar buying. The pair moved amid mixed factors, with the market awaiting the post-U.S. CPI reaction and the FOMC and Bank of Japan meetings.
In the Tokyo foreign exchange market on the 14th, dollar-yen was trading around ¥153.65 per dollar as of 10:00 a.m., down about 55 sen against the dollar from the same time at the end of the previous week.
The previous day's close in the New York market was around ¥153.61 per dollar. The dollar was bought at times following the release of the U.S. August CPI results, but fell to the ¥153.20 range at one point as declines in crude oil futures weighed on the currency.
With the FOMC meeting scheduled for the 15th and 16th and the Bank of Japan's monetary policy meeting scheduled for the 18th, expectations of an acceleration in the BOJ's pace of rate hikes and expectations of an early rate hike by the Federal Reserve were mixed. Safe-haven dollar buying was seen in this environment, and the dollar held above ¥153.78 in morning trading.
