AI data center investment is accelerating in Japan and the US. Nippon Life Insurance Company has decided to expand lending to data centers to approximately ¥2 trillion, while MUFG Bank, Ltd. has decided to invest more than ¥4 trillion in an AI infrastructure investment fund. As large-scale developments progress in Japan and overseas, challenges related to environmental impact, including tighter regulation and power and water constraints, are also emerging.
Amid the global race to develop AI, Japanese financial institutions are becoming increasingly prominent as leading providers of funding for AI infrastructure. Nippon Life Insurance Company has indicated that it plans to invest ¥2 trillion in infrastructure lending, including financing for the construction of AI-focused data centers, and has made clear its intention to expand its outstanding loan balance, primarily in the United States.
MUFG Bank, Ltd. has decided to invest in an AI infrastructure investment fund with a scale of more than ¥4 trillion, providing an outlet for strong demand for funding. Japanese banks aim to expand the scale of domestic infrastructure funds and diversify sources of funding.
While large-scale data center developments are advancing in Japan and overseas, Akita Prefecture is seeing progress on a data center project with one of the largest power receiving capacities, with investment of up to ¥2 trillion envisioned. Overseas funds, including those from the Middle East, are showing investment interest.
In the United States, meanwhile, moves to tighten regulation are gathering pace, with regional responses varying. The governor of New York State, for example, has signed an order suspending new environmental permits for large-scale data centers. Such delays are affecting investment recovery plans and prompting financial institutions to adopt stricter risk assessments.
