The Nikkei 225 extended its decline at the close, weighed down by Kioxia's plunge. The sharp fall in Intel shares in the US stock market also had an impact.
The Nikkei 225 closed at ¥63,081.86, down ¥208.25 from the previous day, ending 0.33% lower. Trading volume on the TSE Prime market was 2.32819 billion shares, and trading value was approximately ¥7.6403 trillion.
Among the day's market factors, turmoil in semiconductor-related stocks in the US market, including Intel's approximately 30% plunge, heightened overall risk aversion. Meanwhile, Kioxia Holdings' sharp decline after its earnings announcement dampened investor sentiment.
Some semiconductor manufacturing equipment stocks were bought at points during the session, supporting the Nikkei 225. Tokyo Electron, Advantest, Lasertec and Disco were among the stocks bought, helping lift the index.
By sector, 10 of the 33 TSE sectors rose. The five sectors with the largest gains were glass and ceramics, foods, electric power and gas, land transportation, and rubber products. The sectors with the largest declines were warehousing and harbor transportation services, services, precision instruments, nonferrous metals, and banks.
