216 errors were found in Hokuriku Electric Power’s restart-assessment materials for Shika Nuclear Power Station Unit 2, including errors in figures affecting safety. The cause was disorder in the review process resulting from inadequate data organisation and the addition of 176 new data-analysis cases. The company plans to organise and consolidate the data and conduct rigorous checks.
It was reported that the restart-assessment materials for Shika Nuclear Power Station Unit 2 contained 216 errors, including incorrect figures for tsunami heights and fault lengths that are fundamental to safety. Hokuriku Electric Power explained that deficiencies arose in its checking system following additional data analysis and lessons learned from earthquakes in the surrounding area.
At a meeting of the Nuclear Regulation Authority in June this year, officials used strong language, including “not normal,” and called for the causes to be investigated. The restart assessment had been suspended, but an early resumption is now expected.
At the meeting on the 2nd, Hokuriku Electric Power explained that deficiencies arose in its checking system after it revised its fault assessment following the Noto Peninsula Earthquake and added 176 cases of new data analysis. The regulator called for measures to prevent recurrence and instructed the company not to submit materials that were insufficiently prepared.
Going forward, the company will organise and consolidate the large volume of data before conducting rigorous checks, rather than processing it piecemeal, and will ensure thorough transcription of the data into the materials. The restart assessment for Shika Nuclear Power Station Unit 2 is expected to resume around mid-November once these measures have been implemented.
